Posted By: Fernando - June 21, 2016
Do you have the habit of doing file backup, removing Windows files and updating your operating system? If the answer is no, I would recommend you to rethink your habits.

In this article, I will be talking about a couple of habits every Windows or computer user should cultivate in order to improve their computer experience and opt on being a more conscious and less negligent user when it comes to some important computer issues.

1 – Backup your files

File backup is one of the most neglected user tasks. However, if your computer stops working, get destroyed or even stolen, are you going to lose important documents or files? If the answer is yes, then you must consider creating the habit of regularly backing up your files. You can use a cloud storage service or a program, like SyncBack Free or any other of your choice.

2 – Keep your computer updated

Software updates correct errors. That’s why, it is important to keep your operating system and other programs updated. Make sure the automatic update feature on Windows is enabled and use a program like Secunia PSI or Sumo to help update your programs automatically.

3 – Check your computer regularly

Another task that I consider as being important is using a malware removal tool to perform a regular computer check and having a second opinion to ensure that the system is safe and free of threats.
There are many malware removal tools out there that you can use to perform this task, however, one of the best tools to use for this effect is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware – you can use the free version, also works fine.

4 – Pay attention when installing new programs

Most people install programs by clicking Next, Next, Next. This is a bad habit, because you end up installing useless programs, tool bars and other trashy things on your computer.

That’s why, it is important to pay attention and refuse unnecessary offers. You can also use Unchecky to help you do it, a small and useful program that automatically unmarks unnecessary offers for you.

5 – Create restore points

The restore points are essential when you want to install new programs on your computer. Once created, you don’t need to worry that much about something going wrong during a program installation, you can restore your computer to a point where it worked fine. To create restore points with a click, use The Restore Point Creator.

6 – Use a basic user account on a daily basis

Using the administrator account on Windows as also the main and default user account can put the computer’s security in danger, the most recommended thing to do is creating a second administrator account and lower your main user account into a basic one.
That way, you have the best of the two worlds, as long as all you need to install and run a program as the administrator, is just simply to double click the right click and select “ Run as administrator”.

7 – Cleanup your computer regularly

By performing a regular computer cleanup, you allow your computer to have more free space and also protect your privacy.

8 – Organize your files

Not only a cleanup, but also a regular file organization is important. It lets you easily find every time you need them in just about clicks. Start cleaning your desktop area and create a file organization system, for example, you can organize them by sort. A great option to automatize it is by using the program DropIt.

9 – Use strong and different passwords

Using the same password for every account you own is a bad habit, because if someone discovers your password, will automatically also have access to all your accounts. So, opt to create strong and different passwords for each account, you can use a program like KeePass, to keep your passwords in a safe place if you don’t want to memorize them.

Using strong passwords

10 – Make regular pauses

If you work all day long on a computer, you need to make some pauses to prevent health problems. For you not to forget to make pauses, you use WorkRave, a program that monitors your computer usage and then tells you when it’s time to make a small pause.
